If you run near the road, here are some helpful safety tips

On Behalf of | Jun 3, 2021 | Uncategorized

The summer usually brings about an increase in the number of people running and jogging near the road. Many runners feel that working out at the gym is just too boring, even though one could argue that running on a treadmill is technically much safer.

But what if you really want to run outdoors?

Minimizing the danger of an outdoor run

There are ways to make your outdoor runs safer than they would be otherwise. A few helpful tips include:

  • Stay alert. Watch traffic, not just the pavement directly in front of you.
  • Be aware of risks even when you have the right of way. For instance, take a moment to look for cars that are turning even if you have the signal to cross the road at an intersection.
  • As tempting as they may be, leave your headphones at the house and don’t listen to music while running.
  • Bring a phone with you so that you can call for help if anything does happen.
  • Run during the day or choose well-lit streets.
  • Always face traffic as you run.
  • Become a defensive runner, looking for drivers who are not paying attention or who may make mistakes. Pretend no one can see you.

Keeping these tips in mind can reduce the odds that you’ll ever be struck by a vehicle while running. You can stay in shape and stay safe this year.

What if a driver still hits you?

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, a driver makes such a massive, negligent mistake that they cause an accident anyway. If this happens, you need to know how to seek compensation to cover your costs.
